Uh, actually, I never even thought about asking Becky Cloonan for permission before I got her work permanently inked onto my body. I guess that probably is something you should ask about?
That particular issue is...well, I'd rather not spoiler you in case you ever read Demo (because it's an awesome collection), but it's basically about the racism one half-Asian kid is subjected to, and the rage that stems from that. The story is amazing and the art is gorgeous and the RAGE is just palpable and I am forever in love with this one panel which is just three birds (crows, it looks like), startled and flying away, framed by trees. I was halfway through a conversation with my half-Asian BFF about getting those birds tattooed on myself when I realized that the fact that I felt the need to even address it with her to make sure she didn't personally think it was creepy...automatically made it creepy. And appropriating and whatever the term is for that thing privileged people do where they see a story that speaks directly to a certain group and then take it and universalize it and apply it to everything, therefore completely destroying the heart of it.
