LOL, well I don't think it's a big deal regardless. It's not like everybody who gets a Superman tattoo contacts Marvel or whoever for marketing permission, you know? And I don't think it's widely expected. Artists might certainly like to be consulted, but they don't actually expect to be.
As far as the Demo thing (now I want to read it!), it's hard to say without having the context of having read the book, but I'm wondering whether that panel in particular was something symbolic of what was happening in the book, or if it was just sort of scenery? I don't know, that's something I wouldn't be as worried about, but I do get why you didn't do it. I have a tendency to mentally divorce comic book visual content from context, though, which is a bad habit of mine, but I think it comes from being analytical about the technique the artist is using and that sort of thing. So even if that would've been kind of asshatted as a tattoo, it would've taken me awhile to realize because I'd have been obliviously admiring the lines of the artwork. ;D
