agentotterI've been working on this story forever, and I'd finally caught the rhythm of it again, and it's got some of the best writing I've ever done. So of course malnpudl was telling me about this story she was reading, and I said, "Hey, that sounds good; bring it!" and so she sent it to me and I'm reading it and SON OF A BITCH.
I guess I won't need to finish that story, because somebody already did. It's called In the City of Seven Walls, if you care to read it, though it's much longer (like longer times 50) and deeply, profoundly pornier than what I wrote, but it's still quite good. And I can't really post my story now without looking like a hopeless copycat, which just... my aggravation, it is epic.
I can't decide whether this is a sign that great minds think alike, or just that I have lost all hope of originality. Also, my whole week so far kind of blows. SUCK IT, UNIVERSE. I HOPE YOU DIE IN A FIRE.

Date: 2009-09-23 01:57 am (UTC)with fanfic, there really can't be a high value placed on total originality. we are dealing with characters and scenarios that we all hold in common, and similar logical extrapolations from the premises of canon, and also the same tropes, will and do occur to many writers in a given fandom.
no one could write the story that YOU could. I adore your writing and I hope you find a way to finish it. Hang in there.
(Also? Think about me -- writing Jack/Daniel first times in a fandom that has, oh, YOU, tripoli, troyswann, paian, anna, martha... you see my point? You just have to close your eyes and write your own stuff. If I tried to compare myself to the J/D writers who came before me, I'd stop. Right now. And that would make me sad.)
