a few thoughts on Supernatural

Okay, I finally got around to that Supernatural post. Hooray! Spoilers within up through SPN 4x21, "When the Levee Breaks"
* Okay, so somebody here is like "the chosen one." The angels think it's Dean, which means that they don't actually know which of the brothers Winchester is going to stop the apocalypse. So basically the angels and demons are each backing their own horse: the angels are betting on Dean, and the demons are betting on Sam. (I'd imagine they have different goals in mind, though.)
* I have a suspicion that since the first seal was a righteous man doing Very Very Bad Things in Hell, the last is going to be a righteous man doing Very Very Bad Things on earth. Essentially, I think that while everyone believes that Lilith will be the one to break the last seal (thus why Sam's so frantic about killing her, though I've never really gotten that), it's actually going to be Sam killing Lilith that breaks the last seal, because that's going to be Sam's version of going darkside like Dean did in Hell. We already know from Castiel -- assuming he was telling the truth -- that in order to become powerful enough to kill Lilith, Sam's going to have to cross the line between good guy and really epically bad guy. (Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Sam turned out to be "Lucifer's first" like Castiel was talking about, rather than Lilith. Or at least the first of a new generation of EEEEVIL!)
* On the one hand, at this point they kind of have to have that last seal get broken so that the boys can like... save the world from the Devil. Except, if they do that, where do they go from there? We saw how that went with Buffy. Every year the bad guy got bigger until the odds of Buffy ever truly winning in reality were so miniscule as to make her victories unbelievable. (At least, if you're me.) I would appreciate it if the new big bad guy went the way of Buffy, though. Next season they could battle Nathan Fillion. Nathan Fillion wearing a priest outfit. I APPROVE. But even that would be kin of anticlimactic after battling the Devil. In order to top themselves in season 5 they'll have to take on God (who frankly sounds like a tool.)
* Also, who told us that Lilith held Dean's contract? Because I seem to recall it being an unreliable source. I don't think Lilith held Dean's contract at all. I think Ruby did. Or at least, it should turn out that way because it'd be awesome angsty drama. And seriously? She can't be a good guy. If they had all this "she's good, really!" leading into her actually being good, I'd be disappointed. She needs to turn out to be evil. If she doesn't it'll be SUCH a let-down. If they try to honestly convince me that Ruby was feeding Sam demon blood because she truly loves him and wants him to survive the coming end times, I'll cry. I'll cry for all the lost possibilities of awesome angst.
* Also, while I'm wildly theorizing, I've got another good one. So we know from the Episode of Jimmy's Flashback Good Times that only certain people can be "vessels" for angels. We also know that these vessels are able to hear the angels speak without it almost killing them like it did with Dean. And we know that this quality runs in families, and that Castiel expected Dean to be able to hear him -- which means that taking Dean's bloodlines into consideration, Castiel thought that Dean would be a vessel. Ergo, depending on how this trait is passed along and whether it can skip generations, it's safe to say that probably one of Dean's parents was a vessel. OKAY WAIT IT GETS BETTER. So Dean isn't a vessel, but what if Sam is? What if all the psychic kids are, and that's what's so special about them? (The people we've seen who are vessels or prophets also have skills like we've seen with the psychic kids, like being able to see the future and receive on "angel radio" frequencies.) I seem to recall that Yellow Eyes was targeting specific families to create his psychic kids, and that he seemed quite interested in Mary Winchester when he first met her... so what if he's able to spot these vessels and he was specifically targeting their children for his Demon Blood Special, in order to corrupt the vessels and turn them into weapons for his own purposes? (Also, I miss Yellow Eyes. I saw that actor on The Mentalist the other day but it just wasn't the same. He totally wasn't evil enough.)
* Okay, seriously. What's the deal with Anna? She just turns up and does nothing particularly useful and leaves again. She's like that guy who hangs around outside the 7-11 and gives you unwanted advice about like... your car or your life or the weather.
* I had a cool thought on Castiel. A TOTALLY COOL ONE. It was invalidated pretty much immediately, but it was awesome. So remember how Castiel got sent back to Heaven and apparently got Reeducated or something? And at the end of That One With Jimmy, he was all, *gravely voice of hotness* "I don't serve you," to Dean? (He meant that he doesn't serve him except breakfast in bed after their hot, hot sexins. Rly.) How cool would it have been if that wasn't Castiel? I mean, sure, Dean eventually twigged to it when his dad was possessed by a demon, but would they be able to tell which angel was possessing Jimmy? Especially since Castiel (the real one, not my hypothetical fake one) has been reeducated and experienced a shift in personality anyway? If I were in charge of Heaven (that happens to me all the time) and I was displeased with Castiel, I would've just sent another angel in his place to pretend to be him and manipulate the Winchesters to my liking. Of course, if I was in charge of Heaven I could probably just reach down into their brains and rearrange as I like, anyway. I wouldn't need to set up any sort of "It's A Shitty-Ass Life" scenario to convince Dean of his own awesomeosity or whatever.
* And in conclusion, I agree with all of you who think that everybody should not be calling Castiel "Cas" all the time. Maybe that's why he's such an angerball now.
In other news, the other day while listening to the classic rock station -- which is where I get my fix of "I'm totally cool like Dean Winchester when I drive down the road listening to this -- and they put on the Bad Company. You know the one. From that truly horrible sex scene I won't mention. Hearing the song again was like having a flashback to 'Nam, only with 100% less 'Nam. I had to change the station. And then I felt violated but the total suckiness of that song. Sorry, Bad Company. But it sucks and that sex scene just made it suck worse.
I've been contemplating lately that recent video -- I have no link, but I'm sure someone will provide? -- where somebody is interviewing Jensen, Jared and Misha and they all mention that Supernatural's female fans hate all the female characters. Which, you know... makes me sad, because they aren't wrong, but I also think that they tend to get a sampling of only angry people. You know, like how if you're working on the complaint line for your company, you start thinking everyone in the world hates you because that's all you ever hear. So I wondered if we should, I dunno... let them know their entire audience isn't misogynous? (Misogynistic? Misogynterrible?) (Don't get me wrong: I don't think it's just the audience that's rolling in the racism and misogyny. But maybe it wouldn't be so bad if they didn't think we all agreed with it?) I wouldn't say I'm proposing an entire campaign, but maybe we could send postcards telling them we're viewers and actually, we do like the female characters? And the black ones? And that we'd like the ones that are something other than black or white, too, if there were any. Really. What do you all think?
Additionally, I'm wondering if there are any fiction/art comms that focus on the minor characters, rather than Sam and Dean? Like a place just for stories about Bobby and Jo and Ellen and even original characters set within the greater Supernatural universe? And if there isn't, is maybe somebody more dedicated than me interested in starting one? (I'd do it, but I have a short attention span. I wouldn't want it to languish.)

As for the mytharc, my current theory is that yes, Sam killing Lilith is what breaks the last seal, thus explaining why Lilith believes she won't survive this war. In order to have a war, she has to die, and she doesn't want to.
I've always thought Ruby's allegiances were questionable, because otherwise she's just a pusher, and not an interesting one. She is, I think, the person who told Dean that Lilith held his contract, and I see no evidence she was lying.

Well, not, there's no evidence (who needs evidence, anyway? if the government doesn't, I don't), but wouldn't it be interesting if Ruby was the one pulling the strings all along? I'd like that. It'd be twisty.

I agree on the postcard front, or something - Supernatural fandom in particular has been one place where I think there's a real disconnect between TPTB and the sane fans, even moreso than usual. And there has to be some way* to get to them without being drowned out by the faceless mob of misogyny and racism.
* Which okay, I'm probably missing some key etiquette thing that only fans who go to cons know, but...why hasn't anyone ever called Kripke on his shit, to his face? I have no idea how hard it is to get to be one of the people who asks questions at a panel, but surely someone could sneak in a "So, is there a reason all your black male characters go evil and/or die?" somewhere.
